Colorbox - Fortune Cookies The simple things in life are the best. As a painter needs his canvas, so must a composer find something to bring his work to life - an instrumentalist, an ensemble, an orchestra, A BAND! So he asks some of the best musicians the city has to offer if they would like to join in, they say yes and off we go! Volker Giesek and the saxophonist Robbie Siemens followed this schema in the mid 1990s with the Colorbox Debut CD "Forbidden Blue" and so it was for the re-launch by Volker 12 years later, as documented in the current CD "Fortune Cookies". The gifted Jazz musician Giesek manages to bring these poles together and into harmony with the musical and other facets of his life. Along with equally resourceful partners Márcio Tubino (saxophone and flute), Ciro Trindade (bass) and Andreas Keller (drums and percussion) he extracts from the "Color Box" hazy pastels, radiant statements in primary colors, muted tones and bluesy mosaics in earthy shades. All of these coalesce into a jazz-inspired language with a well-balanced mixture of written and improvised solo-passages. Always accomplished, always accessible, always inquisitive. A palpable and suspenseful curve is created in each piece: ballads that move effortlessly between dynamic extremes, meditative stillness in the eye of the hurricane, aesthetic soundscapes and funkiness à la Tom Waits. None of this is a contradiction for the German-Brazilian lineup who's harmonically and melodically captivating pieces accompany the listener on an unforgettable journey through the kaleidoscopic world of sound of the COLORBOX.
