This little city on the rhine river has it: Bonn seems to be the new birthplace for Germany's next jazz generation. Till Brönner and Nils Wülker are the most famous jazz trumpeters in Germany. And that's not all: Jazz pianist Marcus Schinkel, a resident of Bonn, has published jazz arrangements of works which deeply connect to the German roots on the international CD-market:
The Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven!
Classical composers have already been asked to collaborate with jazz bands in the early 60's in order to interpret Ludwig van Beethoven's work. Nobody has dared to take this step until now, as it is not very easy to translate the self-confident nature of Ludwig van Beethoven's work into jazz music.
Marcus Schinkel, however, has already interpreted famous compositions of the musical genius during his first production called "News From Beethoven", such as "Mondscheinsonate" and "Für Elise", in his own special way.
He arranged 9 themes out of the 9 symphonies for his newest project "9 Symphonies" for "Jazztrio und klassisches Streichquartett" and melts his own way of composition with the melodies of Beethoven. The string quartet is a perfect classical contra, as a melody carrier as well as an commentator.
The result is very impressive:
The original theme's tempo is being shortened or lengthened, the main accords are being transformed to fit the modern world or combined with exciting rhythms.
The motto of the CD:
"The tradition is not to keep the ash, but to give fire!"
