Martin Kälberer

Martin Kälberer left school at the age of 17 and went abroad. After he had quit his studies of jazz music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz he moved back to Munich, where he soon became a constant member of the jazz-scene. So he collaborated with musicians like Wolfgang Schmid, Tony Lakatos, Klaus Doldinger, Johannes Enders or Costa Lukas among others, but also discovered his love for the Brazilian music and played together with several Brazilian bands for years. As one of the most versatile studio musicians in Southern Germany in the 1990s he participated in more than 80 CD- and studio productions.

In 1994 Kälberer recorded his first CD under his own name, complex and detailed produced world music with the title “Espaço”, followed by some very special albums in small quantities. In 2003 he finally released his CD “Malawi Mystery Man”, his first album produced and recorded only by himself.
His musical range had already expanded by far over stylistic and instrumental borders to a “universal music-speech”.

For more than 12 years he is touring as a congenial partner with Werner Schmidbauer (see also «Aufgspuit» in BR-TV with W. Ambros, W. Niedecken, K. Wecker, Haindling, etc.) and is a sought-after multi-instrumentalist for many other projects.
Whether with Willy Astor’s “Sound Of Islands”, with the Brasilian saxophonist Márcio Tubino (TUKAMAMA), the singer und guitarist Zélia Fonseca or the Chinese group “WuXing” with which he was touring around China, whether on the accordion, piano or one of his many other partly curious instruments, Martin Kälberer is part of many musical worlds.

As a composer of score music he participated in more than 50 movies, among others in the German cine film “Winterreise” (= winter journey), for which he recorded Schubert-songs with Josef Bierbichler and Hanna Schygulla, and the German-Armenian cine film “Mein Bruder, meine Mutter und ich” (= my brother, my mother and me).

For many years he’s also touring around with as a solo artist. Wafting and listening to every note he gives birth to special soundscape with a variety of instruments on the stage casting a spell over the audience – and his passion for Brazilian and African music is unmistakeable.
